On both sides of the Atlantic, Tarzan has his work cut out for him. Stateside, the film goes up against The BFG, The Purge: Election Year, and The Shallows. And on our shores, its biggest competition will be Now You See Me 2. In a bid to get a jump on the weekend, Warner Bros. has now announced that The Legend of Tarzan UK release date has been moved up in July, opening mid-week on a Wednesday instead of a traditional Friday.
WB has likely taken into account the fact that Now You See Me 2’s UK release has been set for the Monday of that week, July 4th. They’re positioning a new franchise against a sequel whose original broke out at the box office, and the sequel already had a four-day start on Tarzan. So it’s not a surprise that WB would want to move up The Legend of Tarzan UK release date to compete. Opening on a Wednesday also means audiences can take advantage of the 2-for-1 Compare the Market ticket offer from the day of release, as opposed to waiting for Week 2.
It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Margot Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.
Along with news of the new The Legend of Tarzan UK release date, WB has also debuted a new trailer, focusing on some of the romance between leading duo Alexander Skarsgård and Margot Robbie. Samuel L. Jackson, Djimon Hounsou, and Christoph Waltz top the leading cast alongside them, with John Hurt, Casper Crump, Jim Broadbent, Simon Russell Beale, and Osy Ikhile in support.
David Yates (Harry Potter) is at the helm, directing from a script written by Adam Cozad (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) and Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow). They adapted the original stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
The new The Legend of Tarzan UK release date sees it opening two days later than Now You See Me 2, which could hurt it. The move, however, will give it an extra two days on The Neon Demon, which is still on track to open wide that Friday.
The Legend of Tarzan UK release date is now set for Wednesday, July 6th. It opens in the US five days earlier on July 1st.
