When the first trailer for John Wick landed late last year, it instantly sparked anticipation amongst action fans, heralding the return of Keanu Reeves to the kind of roles that made him famous.
Warner Bros. is handling its release on our shores, and though they recently pushed back the UK release date to April, I’m just glad it’s getting a theatrical release at all. A week after opening in the US, Warner Bros. announced that they were giving John Wick a UK release date that would see it open right at the start of the New Year on January 2nd. Unfortunately for us, that release date has now been pushed back to Spring 2015, which means we’ve still got another few months to wait for the latest actioner from Keanu Reeves.
Lionsgate is behind the film’s release in the States, and their release strategy across the Atlantic was a big winner, waiting until just over a month before unveiling any footage. When that first trailer landed, it sparked a lot of excitement online, and the early reviews from its premiere at the Austin Fantastic Fest were really positive.
With an estimated $20m. budget, the movie has already been a success, earning $42.7m. in the US so far, and a further $23.9m. abroad for a very healthy total of $66.7m. and counting. Part of me had thought this either wouldn’t get a release in the UK, or would go straight to DVD. Fortunately Warner Bros. stepped up to the plate, and even though we’ve got a few more months to wait than we’d hoped, I’m glad it’s getting a theatrical release at all.
