Disney Sets Ghost in the Shell Release Date for Spring 2017

Scarlett-Johansson-signs-on-for-Ghost-in-the-ShellA week on from news that Scarlett Johansson has signed on in the lead, Disney has set a Spring 2017 release date for Ghost in the Shell.

DreamWorks acquired the rights for an English-language remake back in 2008, and the film will be part of the company’s subsequent deal with Disney, which is set to distribute and co-finance the blockbuster adaptation.

Rupert Sanders, who made his feature debut with the blockbuster Snow White and the Huntsman, is gearing up to make this his sophomore feature. He’s directing from a script by Bill Wheeler (The Reluctant Fundamentalist). Continue reading

Scarlett Johansson Signs On to Lead DreamWorks’ Ghost in the Shell

It’s taken a long time for the film to near production, but things finally started to look good when Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) came on board to direct at the start of last year.

In September, reports surfaced that the studio was in talks with Margot Robbie to take the leading role. Then when Robbie began circling Warner Bros. and David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, a name entered the mix in the form of Scarlett Johansson, with the studio reportedly offering her $10m. for the part. Margot Robbie in Talks for DreamWorks’ Ghost in the Shell

Margot-Robbie-in-talks-for-Ghost-in-the-ShellEarning much recognition for her supporting role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street last year, Margot Robbie has a number of very high-profile projects on her upcoming slate, and now she’s in early talks to add another huge project in the form of DreamWorks’ Ghost in the Shell.

Robbie is in early talks to star in the adaptation, TheWrap reports, which Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) signed on to direct at the start of the year.

The film is a US live-action adaptation of the original Japanese best-selling manga, created by Masamune Shirow, which has itself been adapted into a number of animated films and anime TV series and TV films over the years. Continue reading
