I have a lot of love for Dev Patel’s work, and this new clip from The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel shows why. He’s an actor with plenty of range, instantly proven in his breakout role in Slumdog Millionaire. And his brilliant sarcasm-laced delivery at the end of the clip is something few actors could pull off so successfully.
The film is heading into cinemas on both sides of the Atlantic in a few weeks’ time, and Fox Searchlight is starting to gear up for its arrival. Continue reading
Following the runaway success of the 2012 original, John Madden has returned behind the camera for the next instalment in the series, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a film he describes as a companion piece rather than a straight sequel.
Fox Searchlight launched the first trailer back in the summer, which teased some of the film’s more intimate moments, and with its release date fast approaching, they’ve launched the second trailer and the UK quad poster, showcasing a little more of the upbeat, celebratory atmosphere. Previously known as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2, John Madden’s upcoming The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is described by the director as a companion piece, rather than a straightforward sequel.
THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL is the expansionist dream of Sonny (Dev Patel), and it’s making more claims on his time than he has available, considering his imminent marriage to the love of his life, Sunaina (Tena Desae). Sonny has his eye on a promising property now that his first venture, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, has only a single remaining vacancy – posing a rooming predicament for fresh arrivals Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig). Evelyn and Douglas (Judi Dench and Bill Nighy) have now joined the Jaipur workforce, and are wondering where their regular dates for Chilla pancakes will lead, while Norman and Carol (Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle) are negotiating the tricky waters of an exclusive relationship, as Madge (Celia Imrie) juggles two eligible and very wealthy suitors. Perhaps the only one who may know the answers is newly installed co-manager of the hotel, Muriel (Maggie Smith), the keeper of everyone’s secrets. As the demands of a traditional Indian wedding threaten to engulf them all, an unexpected way forward presents itself.
Two years ago, John Madden found huge success in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, tapping into a demographic so rarely represented on screen, and hiring one of the most star-studded casts to bring the novel to life. Next year, he’s back for what he calls a ‘companion piece’, rather than a sequel, in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
Until now, we’d known it simply as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2, but speaking to USA Today, Madden revealed that he’s always insisted it’s not just a straight sequel.
“I’ve always insisted on ‘companion piece’ … I think ‘sequel’ smacks of, ‘Hey, we made a good one, it worked, let’s do another one.’ It certainly isn’t the same movie again.”
