Sing Trailer sliceWith only a few more weeks to go before Illumination’s anticipated The Secret Life of Pets begins its international rollout, the Universal-based animation house has unveiled the first full trailer for its next big hitter, Sing.

This year marks Illumination’s first time they’re releasing two films in the space of one calendar year. And Sing is particularly notable as it marks their first shot at finding success at Christmas. The movie opens just four days before the holiday in the US, and Universal is undoubtedly hoping to capture family audiences over the festive period.

There are a couple of potential hurdles it needs to overcome, most notably the fact that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens just one week prior. But Sing nevertheless has all the hallmarks for animated family gold over the end-of-year school holidays.

Set in a world like ours but entirely inhabited by animals, Sing stars Buster Moon (Academy Award® winner Matthew McConaughey), a dapper Koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. Buster is an eternal optimist—okay, maybe a bit of a scoundrel—who loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it. Now facing the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he has one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition.

Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Tori Kelly, Taron Egerton, and Nick Kroll top an all-star voice cast. And joining them will be Nick Offerman, Peter Serafinowicz, Jennifer Saunders, Leslie Jones, Jay Pharoah, and Beck Bennett.

Garth Jennings (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) is behind the camera, directing from his own script.

Sing will be released in 2D and 3D on December 21st in the US. Its UK release date was pushed back a few months ago to January 27th next year.
