Coming off the back of two blockbuster superhero movies, Marc Webb is going back to his indie roots with Fox Searchlight’s anticipated drama. The studio’s indie arm has set the Gifted UK release date for June, which unfortunately is currently two months after its US release.
Along with news of the Gifted UK release date, Fox Searchlight has also launched a terrific first trailer for the film. Chris Evans and the young Mckenna Grace are front and centre as an uncle who’s taking care of his seven-year-old niece, who is a child prodigy.
Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy – his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) – in a coastal town in Florida. Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the seven-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary. Octavia Spencer plays Roberta, Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend. Jenny Slate is Mary’s teacher, Bonnie, a young woman whose concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle as well.
Jenny Slate, Lindsay Duncan, and Octavia Spencer compete a superb ensemble cast alongside the leading duo.
Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man, (500) Days of Summer) directs from a script by Tom Flynn (Watch It).
In the States, Fox Searchlight is giving the film a two-day jump on Fast 8 by releasing it on a Wednesday in mid-April. The Gifted UK release date, meanwhile, is currently set for mid-June. At the moment, its only competition is Fox’s own Kingsman: The Golden Circle. It seems unlikely that the studio will release two of its own movies on the same date. But next spring and summer are both very busy at the box office, so it’s not impossible. Here’s to hoping that they’ll move it up in line with its US date and bring it forward to the spring.
The Gifted UK release date is set for June 16th. It opens in the US on April 12th.
