In recent years, Ben Wheatley has proven himself to be one of Britain’s most prolific filmmakers, if not the most prolific in the wide release sphere. This year saw him tackle J.G. Ballard’s dystopian thriller, High-Rise. And now StudioCanal has confirmed the Free Fire UK release date is set for March next year.
The film is easily Wheatley’s most commercial offering yet. It’s an all-out action film that is an absolute blast to watch. It was chosen as LFF’s Closing Night Film this year, and I absolutely loved it. You can read our five-star review here to see why.
1978 – Boston, Massachusetts. Justine has brokered a meeting between two Irishmen and a gang selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired, a heart stopping game of survival ensues.
Sharlto Copley, Armie Hammer, Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Jack Reynor, Babou Ceesay, Enzo Cilenti, Sam Riley, Michael Smiley, and Noah Taylor lead the terrific ensemble.
Wheatley co-wrote the script with his wife and long-running co-writer, Amy Jump (Kill List, Sightseers). And it boasts Martin Scorsese as one of the executive producers.
In the States, A24 will be giving it a wide release in mid-March, positioning it as counter-programming opposite Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. StudioCanal has a similar plan on our shores, setting the Free Fire UK release date opposite Ghost in the Shell. It’s unquestionably a harder film to open against, given that Ghost in the Shell is also an action film, albeit a sci-fi one. But the trailer for Free Fire has already done a great job of selling it, and hopefully that will be more than enough to lure people in.
The Free Fire UK release date is set for March 31st. It opens wide in the US two weeks earlier on March 17th.
