Charlize Theron in Fast 8 sliceProduction is well underway on Fast 8, Universal’s anticipated follow-up to the billion-dollar-grossing Furious 7. The franchise has always attracted a great cast, and stepping into the series for the first time in Fast 8 will be the Oscar-winning Charlize Theron.

Little has been known about her character since the casting announcement was made. But now Universal has revealed that she is called Cipher, and we can expect her to be unlike any of the villains the series has had so far.

The film is the first in the series to be made following the death of Paul Walker. Vin Diesel and Walker’s brotherhood has long been a strength of the franchise over the years, and it will be interesting to see if they bolster Dwayne Johnson’s character, Hobbs, to fill that gap.

Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Lucas Black, Kurt Russell, Jason Statham, Elsa Pataky, and Nathalie Emmanuel are all confirmed to reprise their previous roles. Scott Eastwood and Game of Thrones favourite Kristofer Hivju top the new recruits alongside Theron.

F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) is at the helm this time around, marking a reunion between him and Diesel after working together on A Man Apart. And it’s also a reunion between Gray, Statham, and Theron after they all worked together on The Italian Job. Gray directs from a script penned by returning writer Chris Morgan (Furious 7).

Along with getting our first look at Theron as Cipher, Diesel has also shared a new look at him and Rodriguez sharing an intimate moment in the film.

Fast 8 is set to hit cinemas on April 14th, 2017.
