Nacho Vigalondo’s sci-fi comedy Colossal is just weeks away from hitting cinemas, returning Anne Hathaway to sci-fi territory after her joint leading role in Interstellar. This, however, is going to be a completely different beast.
Vigalondo premiered the film at TIFF last year, and it then went on to win Best Picture at genre favourite film festival Austin Fantastic Fest. The film opens in the States next weekend, along with several international territories in the comings weeks. And from Russia and Taiwan, we’ve got two new posters featuring Hathaway and the Godzilla-esque monster.
Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is an out-of-work party girl who finds herself in relationship trouble with her sensible boyfriend, Tim (Dan Stevens), and is forced to move back to her tiny hometown to get her life back on track. She reconnects with childhood friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis), a good-natured bar owner with a coterie of drinking buddies (Tim Blake Nelson and Austin Stowell), and resumes her drinking lifestyle.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, a larger-than-life creature begins attacking Seoul, South Korea on a nightly basis, captivating spectators around the world. One night, Gloria is horrified to discover a connection between these catastrophic events and her own fractured psyche.
Dan Stevens, Jason Sudeikis, Tim Blake Nelson, and Austin Stowell round out the ensemble cast nicely.
Vigalondo (Open Windows, Timecrimes) directs from his own script. His past collaborator Nahikari Ipiña (Timecrimes, Open Windows) produces alongside Russell Levine (Equals, The Circle), Dominic Rustam (The Zero Theorem, Burying the Ex), and Zev Foreman (Killer Joe, Dallas Buyers Club).
Colossal kicks off its limited release in the US on April 14th, before expanding in successive weeks. Its UK release date is set for May 19th.
