We’ve been waiting for what feels like forever for Edgar Wright’s return. And now Sony has announced the Baby Driver UK release date has moved back a week in August. But with the launch of the first trailer, it’s clear it’s going to be well worth the wait. As if we didn’t know that already. (It’s Edgar Wright we’re talking about, after all.)
Wright and Sony premiered the film at SXSW last night to great reviews. In recent years at SXSW, the festival has played host to a handful of very high-profile world premieres. Sony themselves launched 21 Jump Street there back in 2012, followed by Sausage Party last year. Both of those films went on to be massive hits at the box office. And given the quality of the trailer, and the calibre of the filmmaking team behind it, there’s every reason to expect Baby Driver will do the same.
Sony’s marketing team has opted to cut both a domestic trailer for the US and an international version. I personally much prefer the former of the two. The latter just doesn’t quite click for me, whereas the former feels like Edgar Wright firing on all cylinders. And along with both of those and the new Baby Driver UK release date, the studio has also unveiled the first teaser poster.
A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.
Ansel Elgort leads one of the year’s best casts, joined by Lily James, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Jon Bernthal, Eiza González, and Jon Hamm.
Wright directs from his own script. And his frequent collaborators Nira Park, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner produce.
In the US, Wright’s first film since 2013’s The World’s End opens over the second weekend of August. There, its competition will be Warner Bros.’ horror sequel, Annabelle 2. It had been scheduled to open over the same weekend in the UK. But Sony’s decided to move it back to the Wednesday of the following week. That means moviegoers can head out to cinemas and get 2-for-1 tickets on the day of release, which is great for audiences. It also gives it a headstart against its main competition, action comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard, starring Ryan Reynolds. Universal also has female adult comedy Girls Trip, and Warner has animated sequel The Nut Job 2.
Really, it’s bad news for Lionsgate and The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Because unless they release an amazing trailer for that, this is bound to be #1 for people’s choices going into cinemas that week. Early reviews out of SXSW have been great. And they also say it’s got the best soundtrack of the year, so there’s that to look forward to as well. (Obviously no one’s seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 yet, so it could be a close call between the two. My money’s on Wright though.)
The Baby Driver UK release date is now set for Wednesday August 16th. It opens in the US five days earlier on August 11th.
